May 2026 Water Data

1. Key Insights

  • May consumption rose across the DMDO Footprint, as communities are returning to piped water after the February–April seasonal.

  • This supports our hypothesis that piped water consumption is low when the rains are steady and the alternative is run-off but communities use piped water as alternative to stored water, which is where disease breeds. This is a big win.

  • Cashew-farm preparation is likely to add further demand. In Lindi, farmers are now preparing cashew farms, including water use for weed and pesticide control.

  • Nyundo remains low for a known reason: salty source water. DMDO, with The Grille Foundation and World Vision, is improving the Mikongi source to provide Nyundo 1 with fresh, clean water by August 2026.

  • Household Connection Finance Pilot: revenue exceeds debt service again after rainy season

2. DMDO Footprint Data

The DMDO in partnership from World Vision Tanzania with Funds from The Grille Foundation, has invested water systems to DMDO standards that is “Basic access to clean, safe, and reliable water services delivered through digitised infrastructure.”

3. Household Connection Data

  • 17 household prepaid water meters installed in 4 villages within 3 Water Systems;

  • pilots to show that consumption is much higher in household connections;

  • pilot collects data to support a financial product in which the household connection can be financed (10% fully amortising over 5 years) and serviced out of revenue from increased consumption.
