Method Kamuhanda

Kamuhanda Method did not begin his career in community development—but his path here is no accident. “I fall in love with computers when I was in secondary school,” he explains. That early passion led him to the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology, where he earned both a diploma and a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. For several years, he worked behind the scenes, managing networks and systems at institutions like Ifakara Health Institute and UZIKWASA.

But things changed in 2016. “Everything changed when I joined the Diocese of Masasi,” he says. “Apart from being a Data Analyst, I was given an opportunity to engage with communities on a routine basis—from introducing projects and community mobilization to assessments and trainings.” It was a turning point. “That is where I decided to change my career direction from computer lover toward community development professional.”

Today, Method is DMDO’s Project Manager, overseeing the day-to-day implementation of the organisation’s programmes. His role includes “managing and reallocating resources, oversite of day-to-day implementation, sharing impacts with partners, and maintaining organisational reputation and relationship with key stakeholders and partners.” He brings a strong technical lens to this role, particularly when it comes to DMDO’s use of digital tools. “My computer engineering education background plays a great role when it comes to DMDO learning and adopting new technologies, from survey tools and website management to innovations such as application of prepaid meters.”

Method grew up in Dar es Salaam but hails originally from Kagera, in Tanzania’s Lake Zone. Now married with two children, a girl and a boy who are currently pursuing secondary and primary education respectively, he speaks with pride about how his educational path has shaped not just his own life, but his family’s. “My education background influenced my younger sister and brother-in-law to take the same path as I did, and I am proud of that.”

To build the skills for his second career in development, Method has taken an ambitious and global approach to learning. He is pursuing a Master’s in Project Management from the Open University of Tanzania, and has completed courses in Social Impact Strategy (University of Pennsylvania) and ESG and Impact Management for Enterprise (Duke University). These programmes were, in his words, “for the cause of managing social enterprise projects”—a reflection of DMDO’s own transition from donor-dependent model to one grounded in sustainability and revenue reinvestment.

When I am looking to my path,” he says, “I really feel blessed by God, and maybe that is my purpose for being in this world.”
