Since Chiuta village gained access to clean and safe water together with sanitation and hygiene education from DMDO in 2024, health of residents has visibly improved. Statistics show that waterborne diseases which previously troubled the community are decreasing due to access to clean, safe and reliable water services delivered through digitized infrastructures in their daily life.

Health data of 2023 before DMDO’s intervention compared to current records after DMDO’s intervention confirm a sharp decline in waterborne and hygiene-related diseases.

Before DMDO, water was not safe and hard to get. People get sick often but now things have changed, people have clean and safe water with hygiene education, therefore their health is improved. Now we have fewer cases of Diarrhea, Skin Infections and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs), means the community is healthier.” Sharifa Shared

Life before DMDO WASH Intervention

Before having access to clean and safe water, Chiuta residents depended on shallow wells collecting rain runoff or required residents especially women and girls to walk long distances to fetch water that was neither clean nor safe. As a result, people were frequently affected by fevers and other illnesses linked to unsafe water and poor sanitation and hygiene.

Most community members and the dispensary depended on runoff water for decades

DMDO WASH Interventions

Today, residents of Chiuta access clean and safe water from public water distribution points equipped with digitized infrastructures. In addition, some households managed to have in-house water connections, ensuring that safe water is always available at home.
