Abdallah’s Family Embraces Hygiene with a SATO Pan Latrine
For years, Abdallah Yusuph Nanjeta (69) and his wife Habiba Chilala (56) lived with a silent struggle, unsafe latrine that offered no privacy, no roof and no concrete floor. In their home in Mikongi village, Mtama District Council in Lindi Region shared with their two children, sanitation was a daily challenge. The latrine was uncomfortable to use during the day and a frequent source of illness.
“We often suffered from stomach problems like diarrhea,” Abdallah recalls. “Our latrine was not safe or clean. It didn’t feel like a place for a family.”
Everything began to change in 2021 when DMDO launched a sanitation and hygiene initiative across Mandwanga Ward including Mikongi village. The program delivered vital education, laying the foundation for healthier living.

The SATO Pan Solution

Motivated by this new knowledge, Abdallah decided to build a better latrine. With support from DMDO, he purchased a SATO Pan for Tsh 13,000, a modern hygienic toilet pan designed to reduce unpleasant toilet odours, prevent flies and improve cleanliness. DMDO ensured the product was available and delivered right to the village, removing barriers to access.
The total cost of constructing the improved latrine came to about Tsh 250,000 which was a meaningful investment, one that transformed their daily life.
Clean Water for safe Living
Thanks to DMDO’s water intervention in 2021, Abdallah’s family now has reliable access to clean water, making it easier to maintain hygiene and keep their latrine in good condition all the time. The combination of sanitation education and water access has been a game-changer.
“Our latrine is always clean now,” says Habiba. “Having water nearby makes it easy to maintain. DMDO helped us to build and to sustain.”

Today, the Nanjeta family enjoys a clean, private and safe latrine. The family no longer hesitate to use it during the day. Their health has improved and their confidence has grown. The latrine is no longer a source of shame; it is a symbol of progress and laying the foundation for prosperity.
Empowering Communities, Unlocking Potential
Removing barriers to prosperity means giving communities the chance to thrive. DMDO equips them with the tools, knowledge and dignity they need for a better tomorrow. Through improved sanitation, access to clean water and practical education, families like Abdallah’s in Mikongi village are building healthier and more hopeful futures.
